How to Choose a Martial Arts Gym (and Spot a McDojo)

A walk-in checklist for adults and parents: the green flags of a real gym, the red flags of a McDojo, and how to tell coaching from theater — so you pick a place that trains you instead of just collecting your money.

Picking a martial arts gym is one of those decisions where it's hard to tell the real thing from the costume. Every place has a wall of belts, a confident name, and a coach who looks like they know what they're doing. From the lobby, a gym that will genuinely change how you move and a gym that will sell you stripes for two years look almost identical.

So don't judge from the lobby. Watch a class. The difference shows up the moment people start actually training. This is the checklist we'd hand a friend — or a parent of one of our kids — to walk in with: the green flags that mean a gym is real, the red flags that mean it isn't, and the specific things to check before you sign anything.

Green flags — what a real gym looks like

These are the signs that a gym will make you better. None of them are about decor. All of them you can see by watching one full class before you join.

Real, regular live training. Somewhere in the schedule, students are sparring, rolling, or doing live drills against a resisting partner — not just punching air or running through prearranged sequences. Controlled resistance is how skill gets pressure-tested. A gym where nobody ever trains against someone who's actually trying back isn't teaching you to fight; it's teaching you a dance. You don't have to spar on day one (you shouldn't), but the gym should clearly do it as a normal part of training.

A coach with a verifiable record and lineage. A real instructor can tell you exactly who promoted them, under whom they trained, and — if they competed — where and when. And you can check it. Fighters have public records on databases anyone can read. Genuinely welcoming to beginners. Watch how the room treats the newest, most lost person in it. In a healthy gym, experienced students slow down for white belts, coaches walk the floor and correct gently, and nobody's ego gets fed by hurting a beginner. You should leave a trial class feeling like you could come back — not like you survived a hazing.

Coaches who teach defense, not just offense. A good coach spends as much time on how not to get hit, how to escape, and how to stay safe as on how to attack. Defense-first instruction is both safer and a tell that the coach actually cares whether you can use this. Offense-only is showmanship.

The ability to try more than one discipline. Being able to train Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai, boxing, and MMA under one roof lets you find what fits before you commit your years to it. It also signals a gym that's confident in its arts rather than guarding a single style. You can see the full range on our programs page.

People of all sizes and ages who actually like each other. Look at who's on the mat. A real community has lighter and heavier people, younger and older, men and women — and they talk to each other before and after class like people who chose to be there. If everyone's the same size, the same age, and nobody's smiling, that tells you something.

Clear, fair, written pricing. A trustworthy gym will tell you what it costs without a sales ritual. The number is on a page or said plainly when you ask, the trial is real, and you're not pressured to decide today. We keep ours straightforward on our pricing page for exactly that reason.

Red flags — how to spot a McDojo

"McDojo" is the well-worn term for a martial arts school that sells the appearance of skill instead of the real thing — fast belts, big claims, and a business model built on retention fees rather than results. Wikipedia has a fair rundown of the pattern. Here's what it looks like in practice. One of these isn't a death sentence. Three or four together, walk out.

No sparring — ever. This is the clearest signal. If a school never lets students train against live resistance and you can't find a single sparring session on the schedule, you're learning choreography. You can drill a "deadly" technique a thousand times in the air and still freeze the first time someone grabs you for real, because you've never once felt resistance.

"Brutal," "deadly," "not for sport" marketing. Be wary of any gym that sells its art as too lethal for competition. It sounds like an advantage and it's the opposite — it's usually code for "we don't pressure-test anything, so you'll never find out it doesn't work." Real arts are tested in the open. The schools that hide behind "too dangerous to spar" are hiding for a reason.

Per-grading fees and pushy long-term contracts. Watch the money. Charging a separate fee for every belt test turns promotions into a revenue stream, which quietly bends the gym toward passing everyone. Pair that with a hard sell for a two- or three-year contract on your first visit and you've found a business optimized for billing, not coaching. A fair gym lets you start, breathe, and decide.

Unverifiable special-forces or secret-master claims. "Trained Special Forces," "studied under a secret master," "undefeated in 200 underground fights" — claims engineered to be impressive and impossible to check. A real coach's record is on public databases and they'll point you to it. If the story only exists in the lobby, treat it as fiction.

A punishment culture. Push-ups for mistakes, public humiliation, coaches who berate students, beginners thrown into hard rounds to be "toughened up." Pain as discipline isn't rigor — it's a red flag for a coach who confuses fear with respect. The best gyms are demanding and kind at the same time.

Hostility to cross-training. If a coach forbids you from ever visiting another gym, warns you that other styles are "garbage," or treats curiosity as betrayal, that's insecurity dressed up as loyalty. Confident gyms have no problem with you learning. Cults do.

The belt mill. If everyone advances on a schedule, the school sells "guaranteed black belt in two years" packages, and rank tracks attendance instead of skill, the belt has been hollowed out into a subscription product. A belt is supposed to mean you can do the thing. In a belt mill it just means you kept paying.

There's one underlying danger beneath all of these, and it's the most important reason to choose carefully: a McDojo doesn't just waste your money. It hands you a false sense of security — confidence in skills you don't actually have. That's worse than knowing nothing, especially for a kid or anyone learning this for self-defense. The whole point is to be ready when it's real. A gym that never tests you can't make you ready; it can only make you feel ready.

If you're choosing for a kid — read this section twice

Parents are buying something different from adults. You're not buying punches; you're buying confidence, focus, and the relief of knowing your kid can handle themselves. The good news is the same green flags apply, plus a few that matter specifically for children. Here's what to check.

Do they learn to fall first? In a quality kids' program — especially grappling — the very first thing children learn is how to fall safely. It protects them on the mat and it's a skill that carries straight to the playground. A program that's drilling falls and rolls before anything flashy is a program that's thinking about your kid's body, not the highlight reel.

Is it actually fun for the youngest ones? For the youngest kids, fun is the whole curriculum. Coordination, balance, listening, and games dressed up as drills do more at age five than any "technique" will. If the little kids look bored or scared, the program is teaching to the wrong age. If they're laughing and want to come back, that's the signal.

Is the instructor the right one? With kids, the instructor is everything. Watch how the coach speaks to a child who messes up, a child who's shy, a child who's frustrated. You want patience, encouragement, and the ability to hold attention without yelling. A great fighter is not automatically a great kids' coach — and a great kids' coach is worth more than any trophy on the wall.

Is contact introduced by age, not all at once? A responsible program introduces resistance and contact gradually and appropriately for age. Our kids' classes — and most good ones — start with no-strike grappling fundamentals and how to fall, then layer in controlled contact as children are ready. That's not the program going soft; that's the program being run by adults who understand children's bodies. Be cautious of anyone putting young kids into hard striking early.

Does the room feel safe? Clean mats, sane class sizes, coaches who can actually see every kid, older kids who help the younger ones instead of dominating them. You'll feel it in five minutes of watching. Trust that read. And the McDojo warning that matters most for kids is the same false-sense-of-security trap: a program that hands your child a belt and a feeling of toughness, with no real training underneath, has given them something genuinely risky — confidence without the skill to back it. The five-minute walk-in test

You don't need to be an expert to evaluate a gym. You need to watch one class with this in your pocket:

  • Are people actually training against resistance somewhere in the week? (Green.) Or is it all air and choreography? (Red.)
  • Can I look up the head coach's record and lineage? (Green.) Or is it unverifiable legend? (Red.)
  • How does the room treat the most beginner person in it? Kindly and patiently? (Green.) Or as a target? (Red.)
  • What happens when I ask the price? A clear answer and a real trial? (Green.) A high-pressure pitch and a contract today? (Red.)
  • Do the people here look like they like each other? All ages and sizes, talking and smiling? (Green.) Uniform, grim, and ego-heavy? (Red.)

Add it up. The right gym won't be the one with the loudest marketing or the most belts on the wall. It'll be the one where, watching from the side, you find yourself thinking: I could see myself here. Trust that.
