The fastest way to kill interest in a corporate team session is to leave HR guessing. People who book offsites have been burned before — by a "team-building" event that turned into forced fun, or a fitness class that left half the room embarrassed and the other half bored. So before you put our name on a calendar invite, here's the thing most vendors won't give you straight: the actual run of show, minute by minute, for a 90-minute team session at KD MMA.

We run these out of a working mixed martial arts gym, founded by a professional fighter. That means real coaching and real structure — but it also means we've designed the corporate version so that nobody needs to throw a real punch, take one, or have any athletic background at all. Who this is built for

First, the honest scoping question: this is built for a mixed team. Engineers and account managers, the 25-year-old and the 58-year-old, the marathoner and the person who hasn't exercised since high school — all in the same room, all able to participate without anyone getting singled out.

That's the design constraint we take most seriously. A session that only works for the fit half of your team isn't a team session; it's a workout that leaves people out. For the rest of this walkthrough, assume the standard 90-minute boxing-based team session for 12 to 30 people.

Minutes 0–10: Framing, not push-ups

Nothing starts with exercise. A coach gathers the group, introduces themselves and the gym, and sets three expectations out loud: this is controlled, nobody gets put on the spot, and sitting any drill out is always fine. No live sparring, no contact between people who don't want it, no surprise "volunteer" moments.

This opening matters more than it sounds. The number-one reason a corporate fitness event flops is the quiet dread in the room — the people calculating how to avoid looking foolish. Naming the rules up front drains that dread, and the energy shifts almost immediately. We'd rather spend ten minutes lowering the temperature than have a third of your team mentally checked out for the next eighty.

Minutes 10–25: Warm-up that scales

Next, a light warm-up — enough to get people moving and shake off the first-rep awkwardness, deliberately scaled so every fitness level is comfortable. Easy footwork, shadow movement, a little rhythm. No burpees, no max-effort conditioning, no leaderboard.

The point of this block isn't fitness; it's permission. Once everyone has moved a little and nobody's lungs are on fire, the self-consciousness drops and people start to loosen up. Coaches read the room here and adjust the intensity to the group in front of them, not to a script.

Minutes 25–45: Technique — learning to actually box

Now the teaching block. A coach breaks down the fundamentals of boxing in plain language: stance, guard, the basic punches, how to move. Slow, clear, repeatable. No one is expected to look good. Everyone shadow-boxes the combinations on their own first, so the movement lands before a partner or a pad is ever involved.

This is the part that surprises most groups. Learning a real skill — even a beginner version of one — is more engaging than another trust fall, because it's concrete. You either threw the jab correctly or you didn't, and the coach can show you the difference. People who walked in skeptical tend to get quietly absorbed right about here.

Minutes 45–65: Partner padwork

Then we pair people up. One holds focus mitts; the other throws the combinations they just learned. Then they switch. This is the heart of the session and the part everyone remembers — two coworkers, one calling out the next combo and absorbing the shots, the other landing them, both laughing by the third round.

A few things make this safe and worth doing. The contact is controlled: hands hit pads, never people, and there's no sparring. Coaches circulate constantly, correcting each pair — this is exactly where staffing roughly one coach per 10 to 15 participants earns its keep, the same ratio we use for our women's workshops. And the pairing itself does quiet team work: you end up trusting a colleague to hold steady while you swing, and trusting yourself not to overdo it. That reciprocity is the actual "team building," and it happens without a single icebreaker question.

Minutes 65–80: A light team challenge

With the basics in hand, we add a low-stakes group challenge — a partner or small-group relay built around the combinations everyone just drilled. Think structured play, not competition with a scoreboard that makes anyone feel slow. Mixed groups, friendly stakes, lots of cheering.

The challenge is calibrated, not cranked. The goal is shared momentum and a few good-natured laughs, not to crown a winner or expose who's out of shape. Coaches scale it on the spot for the group's energy and size. By this point the room that walked in stiff and uncertain is usually loud and into it — which is the whole reason a physical session beats a webinar for connection.

Minutes 80–90: Debrief and close

We finish calm. A short cooldown, then a brief debrief where the coach ties the session back together: a couple of fundamentals worth remembering, a word on how the group worked together, and an open floor for questions. People leave with two or three things they'll actually recall — a punch they're weirdly proud of, a coworker they saw in a new light — not a blur of forgotten drills.

No one got hurt. No one got embarrassed. No one was forced to perform. That's the bar, and it's a deliberate one.

What it is not

Because the team-building category is full of overpromises, here's the part the brochures skip.

It is not a fitness test, and it is not combat. Nobody spars, nobody takes a hit from another person, and there's no requirement to be in shape. If a vendor is selling your team a "fight," walk away — that's not what belongs in a corporate room.

It is not a productivity program with a number attached. We won't tell you a 90-minute session "boosts output 20%" or "cuts turnover," because no honest provider can measure that from one afternoon, and the research people quote for those claims doesn't say what they pretend it says. What we'll put in writing is the experience: a real skill learned, a genuinely good time, and your team connecting over something they did together. The benefit is the shared experience itself — not a metric we'd have to walk back later.

And it is not a substitute for fixing a struggling culture. If your team is disengaged for structural reasons — Gallup found that only 31% of U.S. employees were engaged at work in 2024, near a ten-year low (Gallup, 2024{target="_blank" rel="noopener"}) — a single event won't reverse that, and we won't pretend it will. A good session is a strong morale moment and a genuine reset. It isn't a management strategy. We'd rather you book it for what it actually does.

Tell us your group, honestly. Size, fitness range, age spread, anyone with injuries. The more we know up front, the better we scale. There is no group we'd rather not hear about.

Keep it voluntary. The room should feel like an invitation, not a mandate. Watching from the side is always a valid choice, and saying so in the invite raises turnout, not lowers it.
